There are some hostile reviews here, some, but not all, based on the film's failure to be true to historical fact.
One might well cite "The Great Escape", an earlier but even more lauded film, that took liberties with historical accuracy. How far a film should be faithful to historical reality is a complex question, but often as here, there is dispute about what actually happened.
We should remember that the film is not a documentary; it is essentially made for entertainment. What we get is a very fine performance from Bendict Cumberbatch, with a more than adequate supporting cast.
Had the film focused exclusively on the Enigma code, it would have almost certainly been duller to all but a minority of specialists.
Furthermore, the opportunity to bring in attitudes of the time to homosexuality in particular , would not have been possible.
The final section of the film could, it seems to me, to have been more tightly edited. That apart it seems a film well above the average, featuring one outstanding performance.
This is the real story of the fantastic achievements of the Bletchley Park code breaking station of WW2. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the troubled genius Alan Turin who with a team talented mathematicians, scientist, engineers, linguists, and radio operators certainly shortened WW2 and may well have made the winning of it a reality.
To fit the Bletchley Park story into minutes is impossible and this film is not meant to be a documentary but The Imitation Game does have a good go at it.
The acting is superb not just from Cumberbatch who should have got the Oscar but also from Keira Knightley, Rory Kinnear and Charles Dance to name but a few.
The script is excellent and Morten Tyldom's directing is stylish though I found the jumping around between the war years and the early 's is a bit disconcerting.
I know there will be some who will criticise that the story is not as accurate as it should be or that this or that was different but remember it is meant to entertain.
Much of what went on at Bletchley Park was routine and boring but it achieved fantastic results and we owe them a very great debt.
The inhumanity of the laws on homosexuality at the time are brought to life in in this unique situation and, despite what his country owed him, the law takes its course as the film shifts seamlessly between Bletchley Park and post-war Birmingham.
Turing had signed the Official Secrets Act and it is highly unlikely he would have broken it under those circumstances, these scenes are very effective.
Highly recommended. Report abuse. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the part really well, he shows the isolation, the self-confidence, the brilliance of Turing who, despite being so gifted, had huge issues with relationships.
Those around him recognised this though, and his team made the strides that helped crack the codes that help shorten the war.
A truly fascinating film that everyone should watch. Read the Reviews as to the background of this movie. I don't need to add more.
Suffice to say that Alan Turing has never been and can never be given the highest honour that he deserves from a grateful nation. A nation that he loved and served.
A nation that thanked him by hounding him to this death because he was different. To anyone who reads this: I wrote this review on a PC.
