But perhaps the biggest snub was suffered by Spike Lee. Lee made the film come to life as he told Malcolm's story, but he wasn't even nominated for his work.
Perhaps it was because of his controversial statements regarding blacks in Hollywood that caused him to be snubbed. No matter what, this film should have received at least six or seven nominations, especially for Angela Bassett and Al Freeman.

Was so happy I was able to find this on Amazon!!!! Price is definitely worth it. Besides coming with the Movie and the obvious special features, it features a whole other documentary that was published during the black panther era.
This movie shows how the life of Malcolm X changed over time, and while many can't overcome some things he said early on, I believe the most important aspect of this movie is that Malcolm X had a profound experience when traveling abroad, that changed his life, and changed his view, and he was committed to speaking the truth, and strong enough to admit his views had changed, so he stood up and owned that in front of the world.
That's honor. Arguably Denzel's best perfornance. It could be said very convincingly that Denzel was possessed by the spirit of Malcolm X while filming this movie.
Incredibly well done! I second all the other 5 star reviews when I say Denzel Washington gave one of the greatest performance of his career!
Malcom X was one of the most prominent African-American leaders of all time and this film clearly portrays just that. I find this really disappointing.
Malcom X and MLK were different in their approach but they were both equally crucial in the civil rights movement. And considering Malcom X's life circumstances, and also the state in which African Americans as a whole were treated, his initial strife approach I think was necessary.
Furthermore, the personal transformation he made in his lifetime was truly remarkable! Thank you to all who made this film so fantastic!
Washington delivers a stellar performance in this mostly historically correct piece. Very few minor errors, call them artistic license if you must, depending upon which version of the historical account you prefer.
An essential addition to any "black studies" collection which demonstrates that the nonviolent civil right movement as espoused by MLK was considered a threat to the Nation of Islam and why Malcolm X was murdered by the Nation of Islam once he started agreeing with MLKs policy positions.
Explains the historical background behind the black anger, hatred and reverse racism we see in our urban areas today with BLM, etc. Denzel Washington gave one of the greatest performance of his career.
The respect and love Mr. Washington had for Malcolm X was displayed in his mannerism. He reminded me of the love Malcolm X genuinely felt for his people and what an excellent example of what real black manhood looks like.
Thank you Mr. Washington for paying such a wonderful tribute to such a deserving leader. I wanted to see this film because of Denzel Washington I have already said this and to see what made Malcolm X so controversial.
From what I have seen from a number of American films and a slightly higher number of foreign films, it is not that hard to see why he was not It was very interesting to watch.
Director Spike Lee took some artistic licenses I heard this in one of the special features , but thanks to that, I learned of other political visionaries and did some research, the aim being getting the gist of their political thinking and of significant events in trying to make their vision a reality.

As it happens in big films, with big moments come also less big ones. It is an important film, that covers the most important figure and moment in black people history.
It is a cinematically rich film, where Spike adopts his most personal technique and touch to tell a almost Hollywoodian biopic.
And it is maybe the first time he meets and challenges a big Studios production, and partially embrace its language and storytelling standards.
Malcolm X has the grandeur that people like, in order to make it watchable and enjoyable to a wider audience, with inserts that come from independent cinema and from radical political views.
Basically, Spike adopted Malcolm's strategy: "by any means necessary". So we end up loving Malcolm, no matter if we were already on his side.
Spike get through to us and shows us the man behind the persona, the mistakes and the long journey that took him to a rethink his life, through that captivating and understandable style, through a really inspired Denzel Washington, who seems very committed into his role, and through some powerful scenes that keep our focus on the unfolding story, to the point that we forgive the director for the excessive duration of the film some scene, especially in the first half, could be shorter or called off.
The blu ray and the extra are excellent. This is one of the all time great performances and portrayals of a historical figure by a young Denzel Washington.
Denzel is simply immense in this film, and this surely must rank amongst his greatest ever performances. He excellently portrays the life of a truly remarkable and fascinating figure in Malcolm X, going into real detail and giving the viewer a real insight into his life and time period.
I would recommend this as essential viewing to anyone interested in Malcolm X, and particularly any students studying this area of Civil Rights, it really will provide a great overview of this period and plenty of detail around the key moments in the life of Malcolm X.
Brilliant film and highlights Malcolm X's cycle of life in such an amazing manner! The film captures Mr. X's childhood, adolescence and then growing up to be a man and becoming more mature and open-minded.
It's a shame he died at such a young age, leaving behind 4 little girls and a wife who was pregnant with twins.
It is also a shame that many and I mean the press in particular, still to this day and onwards, label him as a "hate-monger". Now, the fact is that only those that are ignorant enough are blinded by the lying dogs.
I will say no more about the film but if you have read about Malcolm X, and want to see a refreshing image of him, then this film delivers just that.
I'll end my review with what brother Malcolm X said at the end of his autobiography, "To come right down to it, if I take the kind of things in which I believe, then add to that the kind of temperament that I have, plus the one hundred per cent dedication that I have to whatever I believe in - these are ingredients which make it just about impossible for me to die of old age I know that societies have often killed the people who have helped to change those societies.
And if I can die having brought any light, having exposed any meaningful truth that will help to destroy the racist cancer that is malignant in America - then, all of the credit is due to Allah.
Only the mistakes have been mine. Malcolm X was a great man who influenced millions through his teachings and words.
