What is it with the boxing in prison movies lately. There is a ton of these recently. I confess I have never been a fan of prison films, to begin with.
Now we have a true story about a guy in a foreign prison who boxes his way to freedom No not really but we will get to that.
The Good: The first half of this movie is brilliant. You are thrown in the prison with the character. The decision not to put in subtitles turns out to be a brilliant one.
One of the best representations of the hopelessness and fear of being in a prison I have ever seen. And this guy is a boxer and you are scared for him.
The Bad: Billy Moore is an idiot. He wrote his own biography I am sure he knows what an idiot he was. To use an example he falls for a ladyboy.
Not that there is anything wrong with that. Servicing another client. And this is only one example.
The movie also goes down the well worn getting clean path. The Ugly: There is a scene in this movie that makes me never want to watch it again.
In conclusion: I am not sure Billy Moore actually boxed his way out of prison. I think his family figured out where he was and started working on the Foreign Office to arrange his release.
The movie seems to sort of acknowledge that but like everything else, it is a bit cloudy and foreign. Incredible first half of the movie, however.

This movie is about boxing in a foreign prison. There are no happy moments. This movie has the typical prison rape and murders in the periphery of the story, but no where near as gross as some reviewers have claimed.
There is no music. I am not a sports fan, and have never cared for boxing, but a simple brilliant and unique technique used by the director left me defenseless to being drawn in completely.
There are only english subtitles when the other prisoners try to speak english badly. The dialogue going on around our British hero is as much a mystery to us as it was to him, making the experience unusually profound.

You are welcome. The whole movie is spoken in Thai. There's words you can understand at times, but they put subtitles on at the same time, but they don't use subtitles for most of the movie when everyone is speaking in Thai.
That's SO annoying! Lastly, The gang rape scenes where they run a train on other inmates doesn't need to be shown. It's disgusting! If you ask me and put all those things together, it makes a good recipe for failure.
The premise of this true story is great, but it could've been so much better if you didn't have the annoying things on top of all the gross rape scenes.
I wouldn't recommend this movie to anybody. I love movies, but couldn't finish this one. Well, one can not complain about the script writers as there was virtually no script.
It was left up to the viewer to try and figure out the story line. Even after doing some basic research on the story I found it difficult to follow. What was or where was the "Prayer Before Dawn"?
Who knows? Who cares? Fight scenes were all shot in very close up situations so there was no need for anyone to actually even pretend they knew what they were doing.
I had seen this movie advertised on Amazon and at one stage I contemplated renting it. Thankfully it is now on Amazon Prime, which makes it free for Prime members so I can't complain that I wasted any money, just my time.

He needs to survive - and he does by every means possible. I am now interested in reading the book.
This film is not for the faint-hearted! Good movie that shows how easy it can be to get into a bad situation. Joe Cole played his part well and the film kept my attention from start to finish.
