Down to the left you'll see the course of the River Thames meandering along. Alongside this is Shrike Meadow nature reserve. Today the site attracts many geese, waders and hobbies a swift falcon-type bird.
Continue for some distance and eventually the path narrows again between fences and you're forced to swing left passing the inlet works to the right.
The inlet works act as a pumping station to regulate the feed of water from the River Thames into the reservoir. The building is a classic example of Britain's impressive industrial heritage with its distinctive bubble glass windows.
Follow the path across the tarmac access lane and then swinging right in front of the inlet works. The path leads you straight over the inlet channel, the point where the water from the River Thames on your left is drawn into the reservoir on your right.
A few paces later you'll come to a fork, keep left here onto the grass path alongside the River Thames signed with a yellow-banded marker post.
Note: if this path is too muddy, you can take the shorter right-hand path as the two paths merge again later. On the right you will pass the wetlands of Pinkhill nature reserve, a series of shallow pools.
Here you're likely to see plenty of dragonflies and damselflies in the summer. This is another popular spot for bird watchers, with a hide situated to allow the birds to be viewed without being disturbed.
Continue on the meandering riverside path keeping the river on the left and eventually you'll come to the junction where the alternative shorter path merges in from the right.
Keep left to join this surfaced path which continues alongside the river for a few yards, and then keeps ahead with the river swinging off to the left.
Ignore the path forking off to the right, simply keep ahead on the main stone path. Cross over the tarmac lane and continue on the grass path opposite.
Follow this grass path swinging around the top of the reservoir. There are several benches placed strategically along this stretch should you wish to pause for a snack or to enjoy the views.
Just before you reach a belt of scrubland ahead, the path dog-legs right and then left to join a section between two fences. A little way in you are forced to swing left over a bridge across the stream, with the houses of Farmoor village visible on the opposite side.
Cross the bridge and then turn immediately right to continue on the Countryside Walk. Follow this path with the houses of Farmoor visible to the left and the stream running down to the right.
Farmoor is a little known village, but it does have one claim to fame. Follow this unmade path for some distance, taking care as the mud can be slippery when wet.
At the end, swing left and then right along the tarmac access lane. Pass through the small gate to the right of the vehicle gate to reach the main road.
Keep straight ahead on the right-hand grass verge alongside the road. On the left you'll pass Farmoor Court, a new development of small commercial premises.
Opposite this you can pass through the gap in the right-hand hedge to join the path alongside the stream.
The verge opens up once again, keep ahead to pass Gate 2 for the reservoir on the right. Continue on the grass path beyond this gate and soon you'll come to Gate 3.
