During her reign from to , England advanced as a nation, solidifying its place as a strong European power, and it flowered culturally as well.
Elizabeth's political acumen became apparent to some around her years before she assumed the throne.
The series highlights her avoidance of marriage for political considerations, her assembling of her court, and her insistence on a proper justice system and strong currency for England.
The mid-to-late sixteenth century was a time of turmoil in England and across Europe. Elizabeth had to deal with false rumors and conspiracies against her, and she made personal appearances across the country to strengthen her position in the public eye and her bond with the English people, reminding the viewer that politics and public opinion matter even in monarchies.
Her epoch was a time of conflict and jockeying for power among the major European nations. It was an era of religious conflicts as well, and the major threat to England during her reign was the attempt by Spain to invade England and depose her.
The scene when the queen is notified of the glorious defeat of the Spanish Armada is one of the most memorable of the series. The viewer can watch these plays with a historical commentary feature, and a separate disc contains special features looking back at the life and character of Elizabeth.
The best show about the Virgin Queen yet made. It's more than forty years old now, and it's still better than anything made since.
The show of course suffers from the tiny budget available for British television in those days, so it's almost all shot on a sound stage.
If you can live with that and haven't seen Elizabeth R, you're in for a treat. Glenda Jackson becomes Elizabeth, and her supporting cast is equally outstanding.
From her ascencion at 25 to her death at 69, every important phase of the great queen's life is portrayed here. Her constant juggling of suitors, knowing that if she married a foreign king she would be relegated to second place, yet more concerned about her country's welfare than her own power.
Putting off marrying the man she truly loves, yet insanely jealous when he tires of waiting for her and marries someone else.
Also part of the well-told story is the role played by Philip II of Spain, husband of Elizabeth's older sister Mary I, suitor to Elizabeth herself, and finally the force behind the Armada and the attempted invasion of England.
The fleet and the battles are far beyond the meager budget allowed, so the battles are relayed by third-person narrators. Fortunately they are relayed so well that what happened is far more understandable to the viewer than the much more expensive graphics of more recent movies, which looked great but made no sense at all.
Elizabeth R is more than worth the money. If you are interested in the period at all then it, like its companion piece, is a must-have. One of the best ever.
Glenda Jackson is outstanding in her portrayal of Elizabeth Regina and the supporting cast all provide equally impressive performances. This is the epitome of what can be achieved within the restrictions of a limited budget through brilliant writing and directing.
Its 9 hours of stage play which is really really hard to get through. Like some others, I didn't make it thru the 2nd disk. I've read the major books on her life JE Neale, Anne Somerset, etc and yes, compared to others this is the most chronologically complete storyline no question, but the production is tedious to watch.
As for comparing it to Blanchett and Mirren, they all have pro's and cons. Blanchett's performance is beautiful and powerful and both of her films are hands-down the most visually stunning adaptations of them all, especially Golden Age.
Mirren's version focused on her men a little too much for my liking - the Armada takes all of 5 or 6 of the film - however the last mins when the boyfriends are all gone, Mirren portrays Elizabeth's final days on this earth in a powerful realistic way that will bring Elizabeth fans to tears.
Watching those scenes , you can't help thinking yes I can see this happening like this. It is hard to watch but not in a bad way, in a compelling way - a giant of history facing death.

I have watched this series about six times as it is mesmerising and its production. The whole thing is really a series of plays.
The language is so ornate and beautiful and the acting is superb. Report abuse. This item revived old memories.
All of which were as good as they ever were. Exactly as described. They arrived very quickly. The price, also, was very good.
I hope I can find again similar things to buy. I enjoy it very often. Even the way in which Elizabeth holds her quill pen is accurate, based on illustrations from Tudor times.
Jackson's portrayal of Elizabeth leans on the Freudian concept of a traumatized child whose sexuality was warped by the horror of her mother's execution.
I suspect that Elizabeth was seriously affected by the advances of her predatory stepfather, Lord Thomas Seymour, whose sexual interference with her led directly to his death.
The supporting cast is likewise flawless. A word about the costumes. Elizabeth Waller recreated quite a few of Elizabeth's iconic gowns based on portraits, and the result is a luminous, authentic look to the production.
This adds to the sense of reality of this series, because producers made a conscious effort to evoke the spirit of Tudor times.
