Critics described it separately as a "powerful human drama"; [] "Best. This led several writers to analyse the death in view of the character's earlier refusal to admit to his relationship with a man, and claimed that the death was a sign that the LGBT community was leaving behind its image of victimhood.
Positive and negative attention has been given to the portrayal of same-sex relationships in Torchwood. Although fewer in number than Doctor Who spoofs , there have been a number of parodies of Torchwood in various media.
The piece comments on the level of swearing present in Torchwood and the role of Rhys Williams , whom the piece describes as "Barry Backstory ".
The sketches parodied the level of sex in Torchwood , claiming "we never deal with an alien unless at least one [of the team] has shagged it", and describing the lack of motivations of the characters.
It also parodies the bisexuality of the characters and the melodramatic personality of Jack, who in the sketch walks extremely dramatically, swinging his coat about himself.
It also featured Albert Steptoe of Steptoe and Son as the leader of the team, claiming "a terrible event in my past means that I can't die.

Want up-to-the-minute entertainment news and features? Type keyword s to search. BBC Starz.
Twee uur later gebeurt hetzelfde. And the other main characters next to Captain Jack fascinating but as I said: sometimes too much are complex and very individual.
The cast is great and very likable. While season 1 missed the all episodes connecting plot line one more thing that reminded me of "Doctor Who" , the character development kept the show thrilling.
Right now I'm in the middle of season 2 and here it seems like also a bigger story line is more present and I really enjoy watching it! Overall: Several things I'm not entirely happy with, but nevertheless a great and entertaining show.
Davies and the BBC made a wise choice doing this spin-off which luckily doesn't feel like a spin-off. Hope it will last for several more seasons.
Totally recommendable! I love this show, from its inventiveness to its style and fashions to the ongoing drama of its plots. The cast is genius, and its the loveliest bit of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, comedy, and romantic drama on television in forever.
I'm not privy to lots of the shows my mum's watched, but this show is as boss as it gets. What else is there to say.
It's better than doctor who and better than Buffy, plus it's more sophisticated and simpler in some ways. Love it. Love it!! I need to start reading the books that have come out for it.
I bet they're not as good as the show. Anyway I think it's so cool that it's going on, and I hope they make a movie of it soon.
I hated the first season of Torchwood, because it lied. It promised to be a dark sci-fi series for adults.
All it was was a show that pretended to be adult, with kisses and swears, but felt like a sillier show than Doctor Who, which is a great show, but Torchwood is supposed to be darker.
But then the second season started. The quality of drama and script and even acting skyrocketed. I suggest seeing it. At least, now I do.
And the kisses and swears suddenly feel like they belong. I had some issues with the effects of the episode Meat, but the script for it was about perfect.
I only take off stars because of the crud first season. I've watched it a couple of times now, stories are largely good fun, but the self-sacrificing humanity of the deathless man that is Captain Jack is quite heartbreaking at times and so often, it's his own heart that breaks, but something keeps him going and the series for that matter.
For what was a spin-off then from Dr Who, by focusing on the characters and not the events, it quickly established its own feet as something different and very worthwhile.
The cast is largely fine, each role is stereotypical in a "secret organization", the geek, the streetwise one, the IT guru, the "everyday" police one that we can all identify with, it's just Jack that is out of the ordinary and John Barrowman plays the role perfectly.
Love the show, recommended viewing. For example the episode Combat complete with Weevil Club and Tyler Durton's younger smarmier brother.
I hate the fact that the staff then seem to just shrug this off with no guilt or reprimand and get back to the main business of trying to sleep with each other.
I hate the fact that any other decent black ops unit in any other show would have fired and quite possibly executed all of them several times over by the end of the series.
Gone are complex plot lines, thoughtful explorations of tough issues and realistic characters. In their place are quick cheap shows with lots of filler and plot holes so vast that they actually threaten to absorb small galaxies.
There are one or two moments in the series that were genuinely wonderful, such as when in the Episode Out of Time the father met his senile dying son and then took his own life.
Touching, poignant stuff. A pearl sat softly in the midst of half a ton of glistening oyster mucus.
I watched the entire damn series waiting for it to get good. It never did. It sounded great. But what we actually got was a TV version of Heat magazine with the occasional alien and the odd gunshot wound.
Six ways. Each of them more than enough reason on their own to have the show loaded into a rocket and fired into deep space. Scotthannaford1 23 October Now - I have to draw the line at "camp" - look, this is a spin off from Doctor Who, and believe me, you can not get anything as camp as the Sylvester McCoy years Anyway, Torchwood is extremely good fun.
We are bound to get people complaining that they let their seven year old to stay up late to watch it, and Erm yes - thats why its on after the watershed!
Well, okay its no perfect, by far, and comparisons to X-Files, Men in Black etc are missing the point - as is the reviewer who commented that it was unbelievable that Cardiff would be on the edge of a rift in time and space.
Okay, so its more believable for London or New York to be? Thats right, folks, Rifts check out the local house prices and amenities before popping up!
Oh hang on - placing it all in Cardiff is Well, yes it does. Thats one thing people need to understand - there are accents other than "corr blimey mary poppins" and Daphne from Frasier, and there are towns and citied outside of London.
Oh wow - what a tangent! Okay, the first episode was spasmodic and rather predictable well except the serial killer being a member of staff , but the episodes have gotten steadily better and better.
The latest, the Cyberwoman, with the run on from a Dr Who episode, was excellent, but with a couple of "yes, hang on a second Anyway - Captain Jack - indestructible a la Captain Scarlet After eps.
This is a spin off from Doctor Who. Jack was killed off , resuscitated and abandoned sometime in the future but inexplicably we now find him safely back in leading 'Torchwood' an organisation which investigates and deals with inexplicable phenomena like the X-files.
We can accept this. However Torchwood is staffed entirely by self obsessed dimwits whose indulgent behaviour in episode 2 leads to the deaths of around a dozen men and nobody cares.
In episode 4 their doorman merely compromises the security of the unit, gets two people killed, shows himself entirely untrustworthy but in episode 5 he's back at his desk.
This is the problem. The characters may have sex and booze sessions, but their actions and attitudes are those of 10 year old children.
They're allowed to kill off the local populace at will-and nobody cares. I'm glad she told us because it's not obvious by her actions or skills.
The other personnel are similarly hampered. The trouble is that it's not funny. Give it a miss. The most difficult part about commenting on Torchwood is avoiding the negatives presented by others.
From the bland, unlikeable, inconsistent and undeveloped characters to the uninspired scripts and lame music.
Not to mention the silly sexual ambiguity which is just insulting to anyone. It almost seems a prerequisite that to be a member of Torchwood one has to be ready to jump in the sack with either gender.
As a sci-fi series some leeway is allowed in believability, but even here Torchwood falls off the tracks.
In one scene, Tosh, the most serious of the staff is sitting in a bar when she's hit on by an alien disguised as a human. Before long Tosh is spilling her guts about what it's like to be a member of the most covert government organization in England.
Another example of silliness is that the Torchwood team tours Britain in a black SUV with Torchwood written on the roof.
But personally, the most disappointing aspect of the show is its billing as adult-oriented. Well take away the tacked on elements of some mild sex scenes, blood splatter and the occasional four letter word and one is left with a kids show suitable for Saturday mornings.
For anyone interested in seeing a better show with a similar theme, look for the British series Ultraviolet, which at only six episodes leaves Torchwood in the dust.
The two star rating is just for the special effects which are actually decent but on the whole not worth keeping your eyes open for an hour. Theo Robertson 13 November There,s no doubt that the biggest television success story of the last few years has been the resurrection of DOCTOR WHO which has captured the imagination of a whole new generation of fans , children everywhere are looking forward to Christmas because that's the day when the BBC broadcast a Christmas special and should the new version degenerate into the debacle that it was in the s so what?
There's children already converted into die hard fans who will one day be working in television and like Russell T Davies will be in a position to bring back the show.
RTD assured the world that this was definitely not for kids and was a programme that deserved to be shown after the watershed.
I take it David Tennant will be making a cameo perhaps? No cross over Rusell? For instance two of the characters in the cyberwoman episode start snogging simply so that one of them can make a comment about her colleague getting an erection a couple of minutes later.
It's totally bizarre because you watch this programme and it never feels like anything more than a children's show then we're treated to a meaningless sex scene or the F word which totally jars with the feel of a show that features alien technology used as a plot device to get the heroes out of a tight spot A sort of HARDY BOYS with lazers or of a cyberwoman fighting a pterydactyl And make no mistake TORCHWOOD is a children's television programme but because there's a couple of swear words or a sex scene this means no eight year old with responsible parents will get to see it which must must break their hearts because it'd be impossible for them to ignore that Captain Jack from the first series of DOCTOR WHO is getting his own show , a show Mummy and Daddy won't let them see.
You,ve broken the hearts of the very young fans RTD. Are you proud of that? If Torchwood are above the government and police, why do they scream like girls and run away at the first sign of trouble?
If the head of Torchwood 1 was prepared to have Rose shot on the spot simply because she didn't know who she was, how is Ianto still alive?
How did Ianto move all that rubbish to Cardiff? Why was he even hired in the first place? He plainly despises everyone for their strong AND weak points, despite their forgiving his utter failure and betrayal.
Why did Jack hire Gwen to bring a human element to Torchwood and then spend five weeks shouting at her for thinking like a human before dismissing her policing techniques at the end of Countrycide?
Why doesn't she HAVE any policing techniques? From the point of view of the narrative, its place in a series or an overarching mythos or even the most basic element of what we're meant to feel about the characters, Torchwood makes no sense.
It makes no sense as a story, it makes no sense as a drama, it makes no sense in relation to the Doctor Who universe, it makes no sense in relation to its own mythos, it doesn't even make any sense within any individual story where they just make rubbish up for that episode.
Those who expect this to be another doctor who, don't expect to much, it's clearly a low budget BBC production, but it is excellent in the entertaining aspect.
The problem with the voting on this series is that it's going to be driven by Doctor Who viewers which will expect something completely different, I for one dislike Doctor Who but love Torchwood, why?
Really not suitable for children, full of sex references and the odd scene of the dirty deed itself. It does show a good example of modern Britain with not just it's main characters but also it's extra's bar the actually bad guys , it shows the drinking culture, the equality we now see in every aspect of life and sadly the growing chav culture.
I wanted to like Torchwood. I really did. As a total fan of the new Doctor Who and the slick and funny scripts therein, I had high hopes.
I loved Captain Jack back in season 1 of Who, and letting him have his own show sounded fun. It had so much potential. How wrong I was.
Torchwood is supposed to be a national organization that has been going on in the background since the s, so why does everyone at Torchwood Three act like teenagers who cannot control their emotions.
They are so busy sleeping with each other and breaking protocol that they have no idea how to deal with the aliens that are supposedly their modus operandi.
Day One was about a sex alien, and it went downhill from there. So far, Cyberwoman was the least believable.
Ianto lies, betrays his teammates, endangers the world, and all he gets is a kiss from Jack? He should be fired!

Gwen and Owen are sleeping with each other, but nobody cares, Tosh is totally isolated, Jack goes from manically depressed to desperately flirting with anything that breathes, and the aliens are incidental.
Then, just to prove that they were 'edgy' and 'adult', they mixed in some random sex scenes that not only do not contribute to the plot, but in some cases slow it down.
I really did want to like Torchwood. But no matter how hard I try to see the good in this Gwen is OK, but tell me how she can be a fully fledged Police officer but not know how to use a gun??
Hopefully in a couple of years Torchwood will nothing but a bad memory. Oh crumbs, it's really not working is it? I love the old Doctor Who, and happily sat through the first two seasons of the new series despite the odd flaw, misfire and under-par episode.
We're halfway through this spin off series however, and despite all the attempts to fit it into Doctor Who's continuity I still have no idea what it's really supposed to be about, beyond the post-watershed teen-titillation and well'ard swearing and gore.
Beyond that, it's utter chaos - each week they shove half a dozen other recognisable shows into a blender and hope the resulting concoction will still be palatable.
There is little to no consistency between each episode - the editing and direction is all over the place and views like none of the writers have the faintest idea what anyone else is doing - and the characters are unlikeable insert-random-personality-this-week ciphers with the exception of Gwen and Jack who started off amiable but is steadily growing steadily more bonkers as the series trundles along.
As an organisations, Torchwood itself is as Mickey Mouse as it gets; they seldom get the job done properly and half the trouble they manage to bring down on themselves through their own personal agendas, even managing to spawn their own serial killer!
Chris Chibnall's episodes are particularly atrocious and illogical to the point of insulting the intelligence; nobody has yet come up with any credible explanation as to why Ianto's brains aren't splattered against a wall - much less why he still has a job - by the end of Cyberwoman.
And that's only four episodes in. A spectacular mess. Having watched the first series of "Doctor Who" spin-off "Torchwood", I'm hooked but also ambivalent about it, hence my average score.
My wife picked up on the swearing straight away and said 'Ooh, you can tell that this was written for the post-watershed slots, can't you?
Russell T Davies has written adult drama before, as well as injecting new life into "Doctor Who", but the 13 episodes of "Torchwood" sit uneasily between Family and Kids-Gone-to-Bed content.
In fact, the attempts to be "Adult" detract from the stories because they're so obviously tacked on to appeal to a "Grown Up" audience. It's a worrying note of insecurity in an otherwise assured albeit overwrought series and I hope that it will be addressed if the viewing figures warrant another 13 episodes.
Both these American shows managed to be dark and sexy without resorting to the use of bad language to show how "Adult" they were.
Have a look at Buffy and make a few notes, Russell! The series manages the odd moment of humour, but the mood is generally dark and it's clear that the members of the Torchwood team are all lost in their own strange worlds.
Somehow Jack manages to ignore all the bitching and hysteria around him and concentrate on his own neuroses. He is not the happy-go-lucky Action Bisexual that we first met in "Doctor Who", to be sure.
Barrowman, Myles and the rest of the cast do a good job with what they're given but the show was clearly over-analysed at the planning stage.
Unfortunately "Torchwood" has lost a lot of the heart of its Time Lord counterpart in the process. Setting the whole shebang in Cardiff is inspired, putting "Torchwood" at the centre of its own off-kilter universe, so to speak.
I didn't see it get killed, so where is it? The Cyberwoman: Why would a bunch of implacable automatons like the Cybermen create a "sexy" hybrid with metal boobs, high heels and a visible belly button?
And why didn't Ianto end up dead in a tray next to Suzy Costello? He flouts every rule of the Torchwood Institute, recklessly endangers his colleagues and gets a scientist and a pizza delivery girl killed.
How did he earn a reprieve after that level of betrayal? Presumably no one else knew how the coffee maker worked? Countrycide: Torchwood operatives are getting picked off like flies but no-one thinks about getting the police or the army dare I say UNIT?
Jack and Ianto: Presumably the shock of losing his girlfriend in the Cyberwoman episode makes Ianto decide to go gay or omnisexual or whatever.
Look, the chances of 2 men with homosexual tendencies working together in any field outside the fashion industry are pretty damn slim.
Given the attitude toward homosexuality odd years ago, it's a safe bet that the other servicemen in the nightclub would have dragged the original Harkness into a back alley and kicked him to death for dancing with another man in front of them.
I'll be tuning in if they make another series but I won't stick with "Torchwood" if it's as overwrought as Series 1. Russell T Davies needs to take a firmer grip on the reins of his creation if he wants it to be viewed in the same light as the new "Doctor Who".
I am like the other reviewers here. I really wanted to like this programme. But what a waste of time it all is. I watched many Sci-Fi serials over the years.
Stargate SG-1, X-Files, Dead Zone, etc etc all have good characterisation, scripts and believability generally , I get engrossed in the characters, care about them, and like them.
The plots are entertaining Torchwood has none of these things. Targeted as "adult" science fiction, it nibbles inanely as weird sexual stereo-types.
Casting both straight and gay people are desperately dysfunctional. If it had plot episodes perhaps we could forgive this needless pandering to sexuality in the show which is done very badly.
Now these were good actors, had a good story line, even tragic death involved. But only because it had nothing whatsoever to do with the actors who are cast as Torchwood members!!!!
There is no unity in the camp titter titter Jack Harkness can't control his unprofessional bunch of assistants, they all sneak around self-obsessed, undermining both his authority and their own, "wondering " who is really is In the last and completely spoilt episodes they generally turned on each other, shoot each other, betrayed each other, disobeyed their own Torchwood directives.
And the ending when the monster appeared, well what was that about I ask you? It is such a letdown. No characterisation you care about, I definitely hope and pray they don't make a series 2, the script-writing is really poor.
A wasted opportunity. And I've never seen so many needless shots of "downtown" Cardiff. In fact at least 15 minutes of each episode is filled with this downtown shot filler!!!
Perhaps I am a little let down because it is another in my opinion embarrassing British Sci-Fi flop.
Oh Dear Stargazer59 23 October I have to admit a success on the part of Russell T. He successfully fooled me, and no doubt countless others, into believing second-in-command Suzie Costello Indira Varma would be a regular of the "Torchwood" team.
But she's not, and that's why she wasn't at the press launch last week and thus absent from the subsequent photo. She was simply a guest in the opening episode, "Everything Changes", despite the misleading publicity, appearing with the other five on the cover of the Radio Times and with a profile inside, equal to that of the truly-regular members of the cast.
I'm not usually so gullible. At least, I hope not. For all its SF trappings, Spielberg's film is a very traditional affair.
And it isn't as if "Torchwood" is the first series to bump off a "regular" so soon. I'm sure fans of "Spooks" haven't forgotten the almost immediate demise of Lisa Faulkner.
So I was taken in, tricked, not surprised exactly because I hadn't really had a chance to get to know the character. Was this ploy meant to endear me to the new series or irritate me into dislike?
Alienating the audience is becoming a habit with RTD shows. It happened in the last series of "Doctor Who", at least twice, at the beginning of both "Rise of the Cybermen", with the humiliation of Mickey, and on arrival in "The Impossible Planet", whatever the merits might be of the remainder of those two stories.
I didn't really warm to "Torchwood", regardless of being duped. Doctor Who. History Canada and the U. Australia Music theme music composers soundtrack releases featured music.
