I should have expected that what it might imply would soon be turned on its head. This film attempts to explore what women do to conform to a 'female' role as dictated by an external, while competing in a masculinized definition of success.
One might point out that in that same moment we might be perverting the masculine. Perhaps that's why the main character, played by Swinton, displays both by way of an implied bisexuality.
If, even in stilettos, one is acting a masculine role wouldn't it follow they'd also be looking at the next beautiful woman?
But seeing her as both desirable and competition for male attention. The setting and characters are highly stylized in pursuit of displaying the perversion of femininity.
Amy Madigan as co-star is what got me rent the film. I always enjoy her work. For me, the most interesting was the view through the eyes of a teenage girl assessing who she is compared to what she sees.
In the end, I may have been scratching my head but I got the message. That's my opinion and I could be wrong. What a cool indie. Really raw and fresh.

Tilda Swinton is a force. The movie is pretty bad but you can see the director winking at the book and the books author through out the entire movie.

Every once in awhile I like a little dose of film noir. Throw in a dark setting with some creepy characters and I'm good to go.

I don't know. Or care. Incidentally, Amy Madigan and Frances Fisher head a supporting cast of equally troubled souls. So what to do about my appetite for film noir?
Ah, yes: a Three Stooges movie. That should do it. At times it was very hard to follow, but I believe that is actually what the writer intended. It was entertaining and of good quality.
