While it does not always hit the mark, A for effort! In all fairness, Boston Legal is a comedy-drama. Great story lines, very humorous and Spader and Shcaffner are a great pair for this series.
I am a big James Spader fan ever since discovering him on The Blacklist. I think he is even better if that's possible in Boston Legal which I discovered recently when it began running on the Escape channel.

Not your every day" ho-hum whodunit", David E Kelley is one of my favorite producers, along with David Milch and Steven Bocho, there are no others that come close in my opinion.
Kelley's original intent remains unseen, but it was a tactically shrewd and smart move, nonetheless. Sporting a great cast, sharp writing, relevant topical issues, laugh-out-loud humor and remarkable heart, Boston Legal original working title "Fleet Street" continued to do what The Practice did for legal dramas, only in a much more humorous way.
Props to Fox for packaging the show in a first-rate DVD season set which features immaculate picture and sound and cool extras. Most notably, the deleted scenes from the pilot which Kelley explains in the introduction as being too "Practice-like" i.
Boston Legal - Season One is a 5-disc single-sided set featuring all 17 episodes; Widescreen 1. Boston Legal is a very funny show about a group of lawyers, all of whom are eccentric to a slight or great degree.
What is very impressive is that in any given episode you'll find yourself laughing at the humor, while you're also thinking about some of the issues the show raises: defending guilty persons, the pharmaceutical industry, foreign policy, mad cow disease, and more.
It really manages to encompass some issues that you'd never think possible. The cast of characters is also very impressive, from James Spader to Candice Bergen to William Shatner and their supporting cast: all make a significant contribution.
James Spader seems to be a central character who is as easy to dislike as he is to admire for his ruthless candor and sarcasm. Watching Spader spare with the Firm's managers is the source of a lot of humor and Candice Bergen and Shatner have his weird yet entertaining sexual tension, and is fun to see how she reacts to the insanity of her firm.
I never thought I would see William Shatner outside of a spaceship chasing space-women; and when I first heard of the former Captain Kirk appearing in a show about lawyers in Boston, I thought the idea sounded preposterous.
However, Denny Crain pulls it off with flying colors. Shatner does an excellent job as the slightly crazy senior partner, and his humor- I think in part derived from his former stereotype, is one of the shows great points.
All in all, after the first few episodes you won't be able to help yourself- Boston Legal is some great TV. I bought the entire series.
This show is applicable to what is happening today more than ever. The cast was awesome. They all brought their A game to the series.
David E Kelley is a genius. Please keep the shows coming, Mr. I recommend this series to all. You will not be able to view and not be touched by the content.

But I have read the reviews on here and feel I must be missing something because I didn't find it very good to be honest. The first episode was just straight in and I ended up checking to see if I had put the right disk in because it felt like it was half way through something, with no introductions to characters or storyline it just seemed a bit of a mish mash and to be honest a bit silly, yes its dated now but still I expected more.
Fans of such diverse pleasures as The Sopranos and Huff may well find in this series a further oasis of quality TV. There's an attractive core cast and milieu, lovely production values and zappy dialogue, plus consistently and wickedly original legal shenanigans to keep us engaged.
Spader has always been an eye-catching, nuanced and authentic cinema actor. Here, he makes the switch to TV with, if anything, an uplift in his work mostly through the room he's given to inhabit and grow into his austere but enchanting character; which he clearly does, over the course of things.
Shatner, meanwhile, is a revelation in his ability to sustain self-deprecation within the persona of an outwardly gross and superficial character whose vulnerability and occasional steel is, again, beautifully developed across the series.
His regular delivery of and reaction to his delivery of his own character's name - "Denny Crane" - is a constant joy.
The Spader-Shatner show is, in fact, a sustained double impersonation or "interpretation" if you like of an otherwise impossible comic-acting "dream team.
Fields brought to unlikely but fantastically effective life - and again, given the time and material to forge something really precious and hilarious between them.
Listen out for the sound Denny's mobile phone makes when he flips it open, by the way I found the first series quite by accident and then seemed to be the only person who had ever heard of it, till I found out my Osteopath was a fan, our sessions were spent discussing it!
My Son and I are now on series 4, with 5 waiting on the shelf. The scene in early series with Denny Crane walking between reporters and muttering rubbish, Whose the Daddy and Pop goes the Weazel, is priceless I am now buying series one for a Christmas gift for a friend.
I think between us we have brought it to the attention of a lot of people,which can only be a good thing, it will make the world a more joyful place, but also more thoughtful as in later episodes some of the more serious world problems are brought up beautifully, and giving much pause for thought;it ought to be discussed round the water cooler.
Five stars are not enough. This tv series is a very humorous and sometimes serious take on the legal profession and a particular group of male and female lawyers.
It's hard to imagine real lawyers having the freedom to speak to one another and to judges and other people as openly and abruptly as these lawyers do.
Be warned though:if you don't like men constantly talking about sex and throwing inuendo around an office then steer clear of what's on offer here.

This is on regular TV in New Zealand which is when we got hooked and have missed it so much since being back it is pure heaven to be able to sit back and laugh not stop.
James Spader and William Shatner make a terrific duo and then with a little Shirley Schmidt added to the mix makes them irresistable.
